In
his speaking engagements, Dr. Helvie utilizes knowledge and
skills acquired from over 55 years of nursing practice
including 40 years of teaching undergraduate and graduate
public health nursing students, other nursing and health
students and the public. Healthy holistic aging concepts
and theories were integrated into these presentations.
Popular topics with the public included stress and stress
management in holistic health, a holistic alternative
approach to staying well, health issues of vulnerable
populations, getting involved with politics, holistic
cancer prevention and treatment, therapeutic touch as part
of a holistic regime, and others.
During his academic career Dr. Helvie developed a theory of
humans, and health and illness that was used in nursing
schools throughout the United States, England, and Germany.
This theory was refined in his textbooks and lectures over
a 30 year period. He also researched and wrote 6 books, 5
book chapters for books in the United States and Germany,
published over 55 health and nursing articles in refereed
journals, presented over 55 research papers around the
United States and Europe, and gave radio and television
interviews related to his work.
Since retiring from academia he has taught public health
and nursing in Germany and visited Russia as a consultant
with the World Health Organization. He has also published
an article on holistic alternative treatment for cancer,
and completed one book and is working on another.
