INTRODUCTION
An anal fissure
is a tear in the lining of the lower rectum that causes
pain during bowel movements. If the stool is hard the pain
can be excruciating and you may try to avoid bowel
movements. They are relatively common and affect men and
women equally.
The fissure is caused by constipation or trying to pass
large hard stools. Symptoms include: 1) a sharp, stinging
or burning pain during and following a bowel movement.; 2)
blood spotting on toilet paper; and 3)itching. An anal
fissure is diagnosed usually by reviewing symptoms and
viewing the anus. If home treatment of sitz baths and
medications (traditional medicine) do not work, surgery may
be indicated.
